а правда ли, что за смену российского загранпаспорта в Сан Франциско нужно платить аж 420 долларов? Т.е. я понимаю, что так оно скорее всего и есть, раз на сайте консульства написано. Но может, есть какие-то скидки бедным студентам, которые я не углядела?... И еще – дают ли они какую-то бумажку взамен на время оформления нового паспорта? Или так и сидеть три месяца без документов? Заранее большое спасибо!

I'm an exchange student getting ready to start at CCA in San Francisco. At the moment, I'm staying in Berkeley while I wait for the residences to open next week. This weekend, I need to go shopping for some of the stuff I need: sheets, crockery, that sort of thing. I think I need a department store or something similar... where on earth do I go? I'm within walking distance of Telegraph and Shattuck streets, am I likely to be able to find what I need there, or should I brave the BART and try somewhere else? I feel like such a noob asking this, but I'm feeling very bewildered.

Henry Elinson was born in 1935 in St. Petersburg, Russia. He studied philosophy, worked as a speech therapist, but by 1960’s art has become an all-consuming passion for Elinson, who became a key member of unofficial, nonconformist art circles and exhibitions of the Soviet underground. A number of his exhibits were closed by the authorities, and in 1973 he immigrated to USA. He lives in Monterey, California.

Elinson’s work has been exhibited nationally and internationally at venues including Banakh Gallery (with Mikhail Chemiakin), Nakhamkin, Paule Anglim, and other galleries and museums in New York, San Francisco, Washington, Paris, Milan, Berlin, London, St. Petersburg, and Tokyo. He was awarded a Gold Medal in Art Achievement by the city of Milan, and his work is held in various public and private collections including Museum of Fine Arts, San Francisco, University Art Museum, Berkeley, Yale University Gallery, Monterey Museum of Art, Duke University Museum of Fine Art, Bochum Museum (Germany), Russian State Museum (St. Petersburg), and Museum of Nonconformist Art (St. Petersburg). His work has received reviews by Naum Gabo, John Bolt, and other prominent critics and artists in national and international publications including Artforum, Artweek, and Washington Post.

The current exhibition at Porto Franco Art Parlor includes a retrospective of Elinson’s abstract and figurative pastels and works on paper.

(12-29) 17:26 PST SAN FRANCISCO -- Sponsors of California's ban on same-sex marriage, which faces a federal court trial in San Francisco next month, have told the trial judge that his suggestion to televise the proceedings is both unwise and illegal.

Television coverage could expose witnesses and other trial participants to harassment and intimidation, backers of Proposition 8 said in a court filing Monday. They said some of their witnesses "have indicated that they would not be willing to testify" if the trial was televised.

Только что мне позвонили с обычной просьбой о пожертвованиях, мол, firefighters, underprivileged children - ничего особенного. Но когда я в ответ поинтересовалась, почему у них номер блокирован, и как мне удостовериться в... услышала "Go back to Russia, bitch".

Оно, конечно, можно плюнуть и забыть. Но есть ведь более доверчивые души, нежели bitches from Russia. И они не читали про "Союз меча и орала". Может, следует позвонить в полицию? Или без толку?

Lonely at Christmas in SF? Some ideas from Craigslist
(This was originally posted on Craigslist 12/24/2001. I'm not the author but it helped me during a sad time in my life so I post it every year on behalf of the real author in the hopes that it might help someone else.)

Christmas bums me out. I have no family, and most of my friends have died. I have no place to go for a friends & family & tree dinner and day of Yule Tide Spirits. However, I won't pule about my misery. I've done this for the past four years and it works for me.

But. This is what I do to make Christmas bearable for me.

Preface this with saying that this Christmas looks like it's going to be nice weather, so no reason to sit isolated at home!

OK? These are just my things. Think of some of your own, too.

1. Get out of your apartment.

2. Take a walk.

3. Ride MUNI somewhere neat. The drivers aren't happy about working Christmas, so be nice to them and greet them with "Merry Christmas," and thank them for the transfer. Make eye contact with other passengers and smile.

4. Go to different parts of town you've not been to.

5. Round up some of that spare change you have in a jar or such ... carry it around with you and give it to panhandlers and watch their surprize ... sure, let 'em buy a beer or cigs or whatever. It's Christmas for them, too. Who am I to judge?

unique trans-friendly greeting cards?
A friend's partner is having top surgery soon and I was going to send a card or two to cheer him up during his recovery. I'm new to the area, but in the past in situations like these, I never expected to find anything beyond the standard "get well" card. However, now that I'm living in the bay area, I figured there just might be a local artist or store selling more appropriate cards.

Do any of you have any suggestions? I'm near Oakland and Berkeley most often, but a trip into SF is pretty easy for me, too. (I'd prefer to stick close to home!) Thanks!
